An oceanfront retreat in the historic capital

Angra do Heroísmo has been recognised as a World Heritage site for its great architectural beauty. The streets are lined with Renaissance-era churches, palaces and brightly-coloured chapels called impérios, while the central location of the hotel offers a wide selection of quaint shops, restaurants and a small beach within walking distance.

Historically, Terceira was an important port frequented by ships travelling between the continents. The imposing fortifications of São João Baptista and Castelo de São Sebastião flank the natural bay and were originally designed to protect the harbour from pirates.

Terceira: Back to nature

This tiny island offers a remarkable diversity of landscapes – from the ancient volcanic crater of Monte Brasil and striking patchworks of agricultural land, to quiet coastal villages and underwater archaeological parks. If you’re looking for a place for a swim, Praia da Vitória boasts a popular sandy cove while many inviting natural rock pools can be found along the coast. Other attractions include the cathedral-like grottoes of Algar do Carvão and the unique winegrowing region around Biscoitos.

Although buses and taxis are available, car hire is essential to appreciate all this island has to offer. Visitors can also travel by ferry to visit other islands in the archipelago.
